Connection between Late Show with David Letterman and The National Council of Churches?

This morning while reading about the release of “Voices of Christmas from the National Council of Churches" I noticed a reference to it being played Christmas eve during the normal 11:35pm late show time slot on CBS. I don't think it's just by chance that this special is showing on CBS and during the letterman time slot. For many years now The Late Show has been creating these joke video bits and at the end the announcer will come on and say "This message has been brought to you by The National Council of Churches. Back to you, Dave." Here is my wild guess. I think David Letterman's production company Worldwide Pants Incorporated does some work for The National Council of Churches and possibly even produced this Christmas Special. They made the deal and offered up the late show time slot for some discount. If someone knows the real connection please comment below.

Thanksgiving Family Memories

Every year for Thanksgiving when I was a child, the Buckley's would jump into the blue bomber station wagon and go over to Grandma and Grandpa Fielder's house for dinner. Upon arrival, my brother and I would race down into the basement so we could play pool and go through Grandpa's workbench. The basement was dark, musty, and we loved it! It was never long before Grandma would call us upstairs for dinner. She always kept us on schedule. As soon as Grandpa finished praying, my brother and I would lunge for the sweet potatoes with huge marshmallows on top. Good times!

This year I'm grateful for family, especially grandparents. In the last two years my family has lost both my Grandma Fielder and most recently my Grandma Buckley. If I owned a jet I would visit my Grandpa Fielder every week. He's such a wise and gracious person. Every time I visit, I learn something new about his life and story.

May God bless you and your families on this Thanksgiving Day!

Worship Market Team, at Apple?

I couldn't wait for mr. moderator to fill us in on this Apple Worship Market Team meeting he attended this past week at Apple headquarters . Curiosity was killing me. I decided to do a little research of my own.  After some minor google searching I found pretty much nothing. We might just have to wait for the moderator to speak.  What I did find was an invitation to an event at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, GA on July 29th, 2008 being lead by an Apple staffer by the name of Brian O'Neal.  His position at Apple is Worship Market Account Executive.  This particular invitation was sent out to churches in the surrounding area.  A copy of that invitation is below.  The invitation invites potential participants to "discuss Apple solutions and technologies for Houses of Worship and Ministries".

Please join Apple for a short briefing to introduce you to the new
Worship Market Team, and to discuss Apple solutions and technologies for Houses of Worship and Ministries. Box will be provided.

Please reserve this date in your calendar. There will be a special price offer for a MacBook Pro Bundle for those who attend. Hurry, seating will be limited to the first 30 attendees.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you there.

God Bless,

Brian O'Neal
Enterprise - Worship Market Account Executive
Apple Inc.

What could these solutions and technologies be?  I highly doubt Apple will develop any hardware solutions.  The fact that they haven't released a mac tablet for their very large customer base of graphic artists leads me to believe hardware is not in the conversation.  That leaves us with Software.  Could they be developing a new version of their presentation software called keynote that's customized for churches?  Could they be developing something special for church musicians?  My guess is whatever they develop it will have to exist within or on top of the framework of an existing apple software platform.

What would you like Apple to develop?  Who knows, they might read your ideas, contact you and offer you a job.  When your rich and famous don't forget about the little people like me that helped you get your start.

My brothers first project at The New York Film Academy

This past week my brother started taking classes at The New York Film Academy . I believe the scene he edited above was one of his first projects. I'm really excited for him. What an amazing opportunity! Go Daniel!

Greetings from Moderator Bruce via video

I just finished watching this greeting Bruce recorded for Trinity Presbytery.  I had a smile on my face during the whole clip.  Oops, maybe I shouldn't refer to him so casually as Bruce.  That's Bruce Reyes-Chow, moderator of the 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA).  That's a mouthful.  Ok, back to explaining my reaction to bruce's electronic presbytery greeting.  Many presby friends and commissioners I know walked away from from general assembly asking questions like...

"how will the church respond to bruce and his Web 2.0NESS?"
"will they know what to do with him?"
"does this mean we need to start training our elders how to blog?

Some of these questions were fair and others just came from a place of not getting it.  I can't speak for Bruce but I'm pretty sure he isn't trying to model the only way of doing church.  He's modeling the way that best meets the needs of his community of faith and openly sharing some of the tools he's learned to use along the way.

This video is a great example of what I'm talking about.  Over the last few months when Bruce has learned of events that he can't attend in person he's offered to send greetings live via skype video or record a greeting like this.  In past years its taken a minimum of 6 months for a moderator to film a greeting, have it edited and then distributed across the church.  Tools like and web cams give the church the ability to communicate with one another face to face much more quickly.

This video made me smile because I know the conversations it might spark.  After watching some commissioners might ask how he did that?  Could we record videos like that for our church?  Presbytery staff might see this as a way to communicate more effectively to churches on a regular basis.  Who knows?

That's enough of my random thoughts for now.

Now heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers Bruce!

Where were you when you heard about the attacks on 9/11?

I was deeply sleeping when Kenneth Slifer who was visiting at the time woke me up and told me to come see what was happening in New York City. I had just moved to Louisville, Kentucky from New Jersey for a new job at The Presbyterian Center. I tried calling family for hours only getting busy signals. I think I finally got someone around lunch. I remember my mom telling me later that night about the smoke clouds that were drifting through the school playground 40 miles south on the jersey shore that afternoon. It feels like it only happened last year.

Dad's in heaven surrounded by his people

Yesterday afternoon my father and brother arrived from Eatontown, NJ.  A little back story is necessary at this point.  During our travels to New Jersey a few weeks ago to be with my grandmother before she passed away we began to experience some car trouble.  We ended up needing some extensive transmission work down.  My parents offered us one of their cars so that we could return home to Louisville and get back to work.  I believe secretly my father saw it as an opportunity to drive my car back to Louisville just by chance the same week of The National Quartet Convention.  The National Quartet Convention (NQC) is an annual gathering of Southern Gospel quartets and musicians. It is currently held at Freedom Hall on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.  Upon arrival my dad sat and rested for about 30 minutes and then quickly departed.  He didn't want to miss one more minute of that event.  Like I said in the title, Dad's in heaven surrounded by his people.

Hospice was brought in on Monday. Yesterday Gina and I arrived in Jersey and went straight to the nursing home. Please continue keeping her in your thoughts and prayers.

Happy Cog Studios to redesign

I've heard from a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) web team that Happy Cog Studios ( out of Philadelphia, PA has been hired to redesign the ancient and much complained about After reviewing their portfolio I believe that this company has the skills and experience to design a contemporary web site for the church today, tomorrow and beyond. The new needs to be more than just a website. It needs to be a place of community and sharing. The current site is very one-dimensional. It's going to need to be flexible and have the ability to grow and change quickly and easily. How could become a more effective tool for you?

Steven Curtis Chapman’s 5-year-old struck by car driven by her brother

Last night before going to bed I was reading the news on my treo and saw this story about the tragic death of the daughter of Steven Curtis Chapman. For those of my non-church friends I should explain who he is.

Steven Curtis Chapman is a Grammy-winning Christian music star who I grew up listening to. I still do to this day. I saw him in concert as a kid a few times, he performed during the 2000 Presbyterian New Years event in Indianapolis. Last summer I had the unique opportunity to speak to him for a few minutes after literally running into him while quickly making my way to my exhibit hall booth at the CBA book show in Atlanta. I was coming around the corner from one direction and he was coming around from the other with a guitar case in his hand. We ran directly into each other. I remember being so embarrassed and apologizing to this total stranger. Then I looked him in the eyes and went, "wait a second, your steven curtis chapman!". He replied in such a soft and calm tone, "yes sir, I am". I remember laughing telling him to please not call me sir. We then stood their for about 5 minutes chatting. His people that were walking with him very obviously wanted him to keep walking, but he just stood their talking to me. Asking me all sorts of questions about my work and what brought me to that event. He was so kind and genuinely curious about my story.

I think having that personal experience made last nights news even worse. His daughter Maria was struck and killed yesterday by a sport utility vehicle driven by her brother. She was hit in the driveway of the family’s home Wednesday afternoon by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother who apparently did not see her. The reports I've read said that a few members of the family witnessed the accident.
For more information about this story visit the following

My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Chapman family and especially with their son.
